We’re Back…

One e-mail was all it took, but as of 2 o’clock today the holding page has been taken down and we are back on-line again!
Not sure why the holding page was there in the first place, maybe there’s a God/god and he was trying to tell me something? Maybe some bloke just bunged it on my site by mistake”¦ we will just never know and it’s a mystery I shall take to my grave.

Anyone remember the Krypton Factor? That was a rubbish program, and slightly, well…

Talking of rubbish programs”¦
I have been amazed recently at the complexity of doing what is seemingly simple stuff with databases in VB.NET. Now, I understand that the database classes in the new frameworks allow you to do cleaver stuff, and I know, and I have benefited, from the powerful UI controls. I have also found out that getting what you need done, is not impossible with the help of the internet. By why is it such a carry on? I wish Microsoft would make VB simpler, smaller, and faster and let C# have all the “power”. What’s the point of two languages that at exactly (exactly!) the same? – Oh, and can you write wizards that actually work?! – Donkeys!

The Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight

Recently I was in a business meeting, the chap from the “other side” suggested that i should stop making posts in the wee small hours! Since I started my new job time has been a bit harder to come by than it was before so I end up thinking about Excel later in the night!!!! Here’s my question to other bloggers; how and when do you write your posts, whats your motivation and and how do you make the time?

And for no reason other than I thought of it, he’s a link to the main man of midnight stuff, from one of my fave cartoons ever! Even his grammar is right! (for me anyway!!!)

Problems and News…

Every now and then this blog seems to go a bit nuts and refuses to allow me to load pictures, or even edit post normally. That’s whats been happening over the last few days, I could not load images and when I made changes they where not saved! I rocked up to work this morning and thought I give it another go and bang, everything’s working OK? Hosting issues I guess.

A couple of new blog seem to have popped up in the last few weeks:

Code for Excel and Outlook by JP

and

XLNS by Jelle-Jeroen

I would also like to point out JP’s code for getting route distances out of Yahoo/Map quest, which might be of interest to some of the folks who commented on the Geo-coding post I made here.

Insight in to the innards of Excel?

Simon (am I obsessed with him?) found this paper about the Excel 2007 bug. It’s not only an excellent investigation in to that bug but is generally very interesting to read, and highlights some of the complexities behind the workings of our favour Spreadsheet(thats Excel btw), well worth a read if you have a few minutes.
Also check out the guys web site for some awesome programming examples.

A Smuf of SpreadSheets?

There’s a new blog in town! Simon Murphy of www.codematic.co.uk has sparked up the old blogging elbow and put figure to keyboard. As you might expect there is some excellent and very interesting content from a very experienced Excel consultant. Check it out here!
