Office User Group.

( General and MS )

Clearly having more spare time on his hand than me (or maybe he’s just not as lazy and bad at writing!) Simon has written up an excellent review of the UK OUG in Reading:
Just like Simon I really enjoyed the event. All the speakers came across really well, and the presentations where excellent.
Personally I […]

Glass Orbs in Excel?

( General and Videos )

The other day a mate asked me to draw him some glass balls, I used Inkscape. Later, because I’m like that, I wondered if I could do it in Excel - this is the result - I don’t think Paint Shop has much to worry about!

Having said that this is a idea that was suggested to me by a member of www.eusprig.org
Lets do a little role play – easy Simon ;-).
My name is Dave. I went to Manchester Uni. for 3 years, I’ve work as […]

Reporting and Analysis

( General )

There are many different definitions of reporting and analysis.
I was interested to read what Zack at Juice Analytics had to say on the matter. To paraphrase, reporting is for things we know well and are predictable where as analysis if for things that are unknown and erratic. Now I’ve […]

HumanComputer Interfaces. Problems with messaging - Part 3

( General )

In this the final of my posts around messaging I’ll suggest some ideas that work towards a better experience for users and thus better functioning software. Of course this will not be exhaustive and I encourage others to shear their thoughts, ideas and experiences.
Previous Parts
Part 1
Part 2
Why bother!?!
It’s a fact that handling things well […]

HumanComputer interfaces. Problems with messaging- Part 1.

3. Suggestions for Improvements
So let’s get started then!

Shocking really! Ok so […]

Data Encryption Workbook

( General and Downloads )

I’ve just made this easy to use data encryption tool. The encryption algorithm is taken from Rob Bovey’s site.

You can drop your data on to the worksheet (you can add extra worksheets too if you like) and then encrypt the data with the press of a button. You will be asked to provide a key, […]

A Smuf of SpreadSheets?

( General )

There’s a new blog in town! Simon Murphy of www.codematic.co.uk has sparked up the old blogging elbow and put figure to keyboard. As you might expect there is some excellent and very interesting content from a very experienced Excel consultant. Check it out here!

Je suis un seul enfant - or not as the case maybe!

( General )

Given the list of values 1,2,3,4,1,2,5, an Excel Data>Advanced Filter>Unique Records Only will return a filtered list of 1,2,3,4,5. But 1 and 2 are clearly not unique!
In fact this is often the result we want but still that check box should say, “List unique records and none unique records only once” (or something!)
Further it’s a […]

File Level Protection demo

( General and Videos )

Last in the series of videos about workbook protection. My new wide screen seams to have effected the video, I could not get it into a editor, and it looks a bit strange in the media player too. Having said that if you need to know how to protect office or Excel files, this will […]

2 VSTO VIDEOS, OK, A1, BTW, GR8 ….

( General )

VSTO, (not Vista or VSTA),
Ok, ok here are some videos about VSTO (…emmmm, 2005 SE…)
First is from Andrew Whitechapel and is an example of how easy it is to do something very basic?!. Then it shows some nice solutions. At 6 mins long it does very little to help anyone understand anything, and it’s in […]
